Brief Description:  A Controversy

Here I have decided to jump into the hot seat with something that Composite Builders fight over constantly. Burt Rutan recommended using Dry Micro and Featherfill while approving Acrylic Paints for the long ez. Over time, builders began seeing problems with the feather fill and acrylic paints not lasting long or chipping off to say the least. One thing that has been the real hardship for most builders is how incredibly long and tedious the task of filling and sanding can be when using dry micro and epoxy for finishing the surface. Some even claim to spend hundreds of hours on this alone! Now everyone will agree that using micro creates a tried and true surface that will last a lifetime however it's expensive and hard to work with as stated earlier. SOOOOO, in my quest for finding a Quality way to save time and money (Like all pilots) I found an article that blew me away.
READ IT HERE: http://v2.ez.org/Appendix%20A-Guide.pdf

*see page 12*

I won't take time and duplicate what it says, but I will tell you that the amount of time and money I am going to save puts a HUGE smile on my face. Now some will argue that this product being a Polyester, won't last long, but what most critics don't realize is that the 1 MAJOR reason for failure is the glass surface not being properly prepared before application. And it's as simple as an acetone wipedown to remove the typical "waxy layer" that resides after an epoxy layup cures.
So shoot, $30 for a gallon of Evercoat Z-Grip filler that applies great, sands even better, and hasn't shown a SINGLE Pin hole yet is making me happy that I did my homework.
I chose an area on the plane that gives me the ability to see how it responds to glass, metal, micro, and foam. My favorite thing so far is the fact that it is sandable in 20 minutes!
Tomorrow I will apply enough to do the entire area and we'll see how it turns out.
