Brief Description:  Alodined and Primed the HS & VS Ribs and Spars

Applied Alodine to all of the spar and ribs of the horizontal and vertical stabilizer. That turned out to be not so bad. I was expecting that it was going to be a pain. Just time consuming. Moved right into priming the parts. I'm using PPG DP (DP50 primer, DP701 catalyst) series primer that was recommended by a friend of mine who does a lot of painting. It's expensive, but it'll really seal and protect the aluminum well. The only pain is that the DP701 catalyis requires a 30 minute waiting period after you mix it with the DP50 primer. That's a logistical thing that I'll have to get over, especially if I mix several batches. One cool thing is that the primer mixture has a 72 hour pot life, so I can mix a batch and wait a day if I want. That's nice, then I don't have to hurry. The first batch of parts seem to coat really nice. The following two batches didn't do quite as well because the flow of primer through my gun decreased to the point that I had to hold it about two inches away from the parts to get it to coat very well. I cleaned my gun, but it didn't help. So, all I can think of is that I need to reduce (thin) the primer mixture a little more. Next time I do a batch of parts I'll experiment with this a bit more. The resulting finish wasn't all that pretty, but the coverage was OK. I wasn't worried because most of these parts are internal, most of the are alclad, I applied alodine and the external surfaces will be primed and painted again at a later date. Pretty comprehensive corrosion protection I think.
