I found some aluminium mesh at Halfords and used some JB Weld to bond a small section of mesh to the fuel vent. After it set I trimmed and polished the edges smooth.
Hopefully this should stop any unwanted visitors into the fuel vent!
I plan to use the rest of the mesh on the NACA fresh air vents.
