I have seen several ways of rivetting the ailerons and I wanted to devise a way of doing it solo - my friend Simon often works overtime these days and my son Robin is on school holiday so friends/cricket/golf/sleeping in til 1300 hours are a higher priority for a 14 year old!
When I riveted the empennage control surfaces I did those in a support clamped to the work table. So I made a couple of cut outs to screw to the same base, used a foam pipe insulation tube to keep open the bottom skin. I then put my hand in behind with the bucking bar sitting on the spar and was very pleased with the results.
Six months ago there was no way that I thought I would be rivetting solo - it's amazing what a bit of practice and confidence can do! Oh and not one drill out - so time to celebrate with a cake! Sod the cake let's have a beer!
