I have read various problems with the W818 Aileron Pushrods so here is my take.
I filled the threaded rod ends with epoxy so that the rivet would have something to grab on as it was squeezed.
I used the "Drill Rite" centreing tool BUT I DIDNT SET IT UP PROPERLY FIRST TIME! Result was send for new rod and rod ends. The tool has a centre bushing and I failed to place a 1/4" drill through the bushing THEN CLAMP to the table! Annoying thing was it was the last hole!
Second time with the tool set up properly I drilled staright away with a 1/8" drill bit that I'd used for drilling the steel aileron counterbalance wieght and some Boelube. I then place a rivet shank (head removed) through the drilled hole to hold the rod in in position - rotated through 90 degrees and drilled second hole.
I practiced on my scrapped rod and discovered the AN470AD4-12 called for in the plans was too long with the epoxied rod ends and the rivet buckled over. I then used an AN470AD4-11 with my pneumatic squeezer and the reults are as good as you're likely to get.
