Brief Description: Primer Wars - The Directors Cut 2
For most parts I use the spray booth or if the wind is light - outdoors. However the skins won't fit in the booth and so I decided to use a 2" roller - it's simple to apply, needs two coats and you don't need a respirator!
I did a trial on two pieces of trim aluminium with the same surface area and here are the results:
1. Two Part Primer - trim piece before priming 68.96 g. After priming 71.14 g increase of 2.18 g = 3.2%
2. Bullseye 123 Primer - trim piece before priming 44.09 g. After priming 44.77 g increase of .68 g = 1.5%
After using the primer in practice it definitely needs 7 days to reach full cure and before then can scratch off but is easily spot primed. After all it's not an external primer it is primarily a sealer to prevent moisture getting to the aluminium.
Here is a link to an article on water based priming that I had published in the UK
Post Script 2016 If I was building now I would use 2 part Water Based Epoxy. If you do use Bullseye 123 then I recommend that removeable panels are primed with a self etch rattle can as B123 is not robust enough for them.
