Brief Description: Deciding which aircraft to build
|
|
I joined the Popular Flying Association (PFA) in the UK in 1996 and started 9 years, yes NINE years of research!
I had originally seen the two seat KIS and then the 4 seater Cruiser. My family and I had a test flight in the USA whilst on holiday but unfortuanetely the PFA never approved it as a 4 seater. Tri R the makers went bust so I lost confidence.
Then I saw an article on the beatiful Sky Arrow in the PFA magazine and the only things that stopped me building this were; the fuselage is too long for my garage, it is not aerobatic and it cruises a little on the slow side (90 kts). I flew it in 2001 and it was a joy to fly, the visibility from the front is stunning.
I then came across the ever so popular Vans range of aircraft. It was then a decision between the RV7 (side by side) and the RV8 (tandem). The most enjoyable aircraft that I have flown over the years have been tandem and as my wife, Jill, had no objections I went for the RV8A in 2005. Why? Lots of room per occupant, aerobatic/strong, huge builder base, quality product, builder support on the internet and when it wants to be its very quick. It also had a great review in a test by US Test Pilots . Post Note - I initially went for the 8A due to better visbility on the ground and crosswind handling. However, I have doubts about the nose leg design and in aviation there should be no doubts; so I have decided to build the 8 as of the fuselage order
