The scheme was created with Model Airplane Colour Design (MACD). This is a great program to practice your paint schemes in 3D. Its free to trial and then $25 to buy - RV Models 6/6A, 7/7A, 9/9A, 8/8A 10 and 12.
William Busto of MACD has provided us builders with a great tool to see our dream schemes in 3D and it is also a very good formation teaching tool.
I tried many schemes - some got banned by my co-funder as they were too military! I have always thought that the Maclaren Formula 1 colours of silver/black/vodafone red (RAL 3020) are very classy and Jill thought this too.
So after the test phase was successfully completed I had a clearance for a ferry flight to my painter Mick Allen at Turweston (two miles from the home of the Maclaren team at Silverstone). I took Jill on the ferry flight as an "observer" and to my relief she loved her first flight and coped with the turbulence really well. Much to my disgust she spotted more aircraft then me!
It was my first VFR naviagtion route for 10 years and my Air Force training stood me in good stead and I was helped by unlimted visibility and my GPS as a back up - one hour to do 180 miles!
Mick was a painter in the RAF for 22 years and has been painting civil aircraft for 15 years and has an A1 reputation in the UK, he is now helped by his sons Shay and Ty. No matter what I have done on this project it will be judged by the cockpit and the paint scheme and so I have entrusted the latter to a professional.
It took Jill and I one day plus 3 hours to strip everything down and hand it over to Mick and his boys - can't wait to seeing her in all her final glory and fly her home
