To prevent rotation and further secure the stick to the base, I decided to drill four small holes in the tube and braze 4 short pieces of steel rod into the holes. I brazed the rods into the holes in the tube so that they were flush with the inside of the tube. This way, they would not interfere with the connector sliding inside the tube. Four rods was probably a little overkill, but it was symetrical.
