Brief Description:  Access under aft baggage shelf – day 1 and 2

I followed the advice of Michael, the EAA chapter president and tech counselor that has visited my project twice. The modification he did to both of his RV-8’s (one flying, one not) is one that allows more access to the area under the aft baggage shelf. This is under the shelf, where the ELT, the elevator bell crank and the pitch servo will be located. The shelf is cut along the 90 degree vertical-to-horizontal bend and the radius of metal is removed so that a hinge can replace the radius. It was a little cumbersome to cut out the radius, because it takes two cuts, but I battled. The first cut was easier as I used a steel bar clamped to the part and used a dremel to cut along the steel bar. The second cut also used the steel bar but the remaining metal to be cut is much smaller and the blade does not was to stay aligned.

After making the cuts I smoothed the cuts, then cut the proper amount of hinge to be installed. I laid the first half of hinge onto the underside of the horizontal shelf and drilled the holes in the hinge, thru the aluminum skin. After clecoing the horizontal hinge half (and connecting the two pieces of the hinge, I installed both pieces of the shelf structure and I drilled the vertical sheet to the other half of the hinge so that it would be in the correct position when I drilled the new holes, clecoing as I went. When the drilling was completed, I deburred and dimpled the skins and deburred the hinges, but did not dimple the hinge as it was too thin. I un-installed the shelf and riveted the hinge to the sheet starting at the middle and moving out. After riveting, I re-installed the shelf to test it out. The hinge on the vertical plane hung up on the bulkhead that it anchors to – so I had to so some shaving of the bulkhead and the hinge to remove the interference. I lumped a few work sessions together on this log update as I have had quite a few interruptions with garage door problems, dance recitals and sprinkler head repairs.
