Brief Description:  engine mount holes

The engine stand (rotisserie) uses the same bolt holes as the engine mount to attach to the fuse so I thought it prudent to peruse the chapter in the instructions that deals with mounting the engine/engine mount to the firewall. The instructions are vague

"...rough position of the mount is shown by the pre-punched tooling holes in the firewall. Do NOT simply drill the tooling holes to 3/8". Offer the mount to the firewall, and use some long 3/16" bolts to attach it. The holes in the weldment will likely not align perfectly as the weldments vary slightly. It may be necessary to pull the part into alignment, and/or file the 3/16" tooling holes to shift them slightly. If the mount is not exactly centered on the firewall, that is OK. 3/8" either side to side or up and down will make no difference...."

I figure the holes/mount are too far off to “pull the mount into position” so I figure that leaves either (A) centering the top two holes and drilling the bottom where they fall – OR – (B) moving the mount down slightly so that all of the holes are “off” just a little, splitting the difference, so to speak. I really don’t think it matters either way as it looks like there is plenty of room in the firewall structure to do either method – but I decided to ask the Van’s guys and let them choose the best way. For now, I am leaning with option (A), but I will let you know what the Van’s guys say. Thanks to Teresa for holding the mount in position while I looked at all 4 holes and took pictures, etc. – she learned that she does not want to be on the TV show, Survivor!

Since I was at an impasse on the firewall holes, I started to cut the steel bar that I bought to use on the rotisserie. I purchased two, ¼” x 1” by 3’ steel bars that I cut in half with the hack saw. I then smoothed the edges and cleaned up the shop a bit. Not much progress today but that’s the way it goes.
