Brief Description:  Riveting F-851 Bottom Floor Skin (A)

Tonight I didn’t necessarily have the time, but it was quiet around the house, so I scooted out to the shop to make some long needed progress. I thought I was all set to start riveting the bottom forward skins, but when I read the next steps, it started with, “… prime the countersunk holes in the F-802K bulkheads if/as desired.” Well, I guess I better tape these things off and prime them. The forward F-802K bulkhead is clecoed in place so I just un-clecoed it and taped up the areas I didn’t want to get new primer on and shot it outside. The aft bulkhead is already riveted - so it was primed on the airframe after some tape was laid down to keep the overspray off. Onward…

Since the holes that were just primed do not get riveted in this step I am safe to start the rivet process on the F-850-1 bottom forward skin. This skin is riveted in two phases where the center of the skin gets riveted to the F-836 floor ribs first while carefully lifting the outer edges of the skin for bucking bar access. The outer edges will then be riveted to the side skins rounding out the bottom/side skins at a later point. But first, I put two blobs of fire barrier 2000+ (not the standard Van’s call out, use at your own risk) to keep the unsupported skin between the floor and the F-851 skin .

There isn’t much room for a bucking bar between the floor skin and the F-851 skin, so it’s very tedious to get the bucking bar held properly and set the rivet properly. The other tedious part is getting the rivet checker on the shop heads to verify proper setting. That’s why it took so long to set those rivets – the aft two rivets are blind rivets so they were finished very quickly. Then it was on to the forward portion of the F-851 bottom skin which I could squeeze and drive regularly. Much better!
