Brief Description:  Inspect fuel/air tubing flares

There was some discussion on the VAF about a leaking fuel line that, upon further inspection, was due to a bad flare. The tubing was flared by the same flaring tool that I use and the discussion centered around the amount of tubing material that was "flared" - in other words, how long/wide the flare was. In the leaking flare, the material went way past the blue collar because the tube was extended all the way to the end of the flaring tool, when the flare was made. I remember in my early experimentation with flaring the tubing - that following that practice made a large flare, so I backed the material down a little. After checking all of the other fuel tubes, there was one end of one tube that I filed down a bit, but since it hasn’t been torqued, no harm, no foul. After that, I only found one that I will have a second opinion on (or just rebuild it). It is the filter to pump line that goes thru the gear tower on the left side. It was one of the early examples but I worry that filing down the one end might scar or damage the tubing that is permanently inside the tower, so I would like to get another opinion by a DAR or tech counselor. But I was happy that the rest of the flares were within the spec. (did not extend beyond the blue collar). I tried to get a few representative photos below.

Also, I got the tracking number on the Grove gear and it is in Dallas, and will be here by end of day tomorrow!
