Brief Description:  Fuel Lines

WOW! Bending fuel lines….WOW! OK, so, it was a long, long day in the shop today – with some success and lots of frustration. I took off a half a day because I have vacation days that I will lose if I do not use them so I was out in the shop by 11:30am. Not much visual progress at the end of the day, but a lot was accomplished. And it is my sincere hope that the parts that I believe are “finished” parts – don’t EVER have to be made again!

I am getting ahead of myself, let me start at the beginning of the day. In preparing to make the fuel lines, I needed to install the fuel filter and fuel pump brackets – so that I could be bending the tubes to an exact/specific location. I toyed around with using the clamps that came from airflow performance, but in the end, I went with the Van’s brackets as they were a simpler solution and match the plans. So, I drilled the holes in the floor and the brackets and then deburred all holes. The bracket holes get countersunk for flush blind rivets – so I did that as well, and then riveted the brackets in place. For the fuel pump bracket, only one hole is there, so I drilled the other 3 holes after aligning the fuel pump lines with the pre made tube holes in the forward side of the left landing gear box. On the aft side, there was only a pilot holes, so I drilled that hole to the proper size and then installed the snap bushings. In retrospect, I made things harder on myself by doing the fuel lines before the fuel vent lines. But because I am going with the Grove one-piece gear, my vent lines will be in a “non-standard” position so I opted to wait until later to do the vent lines. Therefore my first real experience with bending and flaring tubing (other than the one end of the tank tubes) was on a tube from the filter to the pump, that goes thru the LG box and necessitates having the last flare made while in place – so there was not much room to work/flare! The end product was a good one – although I had to make it two times.
