Brief Description:  Drilling Fuse Skins – WD-409 access

I went to get some tracing paper but they wanted $10 for the box – and that is not in the budget…so I made due with some regular old copy paper. I traced out the template in the drawings and punched holes where the rivet marks were and clecoed the paper template to the aft bottom skin (F-828). Then it was a matter of drilling a 1/8” hole in the end and cutting inside the mark with the band saw up to the drilled hole in the end. Since I drilled inside the line, the fit was too snug and I had to start whittling away at the sides. I clecoed the aft bottom skin in position with the forward/side holes on each side and then I was able to pivot the aft bottom skin up - to check the position and then down – to whittle and file away the excess material. If you are doing this make sure you go ahead and install all the clecos when you get close to a final fit. As the clecos pull everything in tight and you will probably be done before you realize it. Then I used a unibit to hand drill the 3/4” the access hole in the bottom of the aft skin – but I waited until I took the skin off so that I wouldn’t damage the WD-409 Tail Spring.

Then I began the de-construction!
