Brief Description:  Adding Tailcone to Fwd Fuse – Cockpit rails/caps

The sweet wife told me I could have some more shop time – so I took her up on it! Deburring / edging the F-804N Bulkhead caps and the F-816 Cockpit rails was the first order of business. With that out of the way, I clecoed the newly smoothed parts to the fuselage and was able to check the position of the upper longeron as the forward bend line should be centered in the small notch of the cockpit rails. I had to slide both longerons forward by about 1/8” to perfectly center the longerons – but that’s pretty close, so I was happy. I did notice that the 1/8” shift does put the upper longerons in contact with the firewall, so I plan to shave a bit off of the front of each of the upper longerons.

OK - I am obviously a slow learner … with the installation of the side and bottom skins the instructions refer you to the plan #74 – which I checked initially, but then didn’t. Well, plan #74 is a rivet diagram showing the rivets one will use during the final assembly of the skins. It shows different symbols for different holes/rivet sizes. I have seen these before, no big deal. Well… the important part of plan #74 is that it shows you – via rivet symbology, which skin lays on top and which skin goes on the bottom. DOH! Hey, guess what – I have the middle side skins under, instead of over the aft skins! It probably would be ok to final drill them like this, but I would rather do it, “to plans” – so I took all of the side skin clecos off from the forward 2 skins on each side to get the middle skins properly positioned on top of the aft skin. It is fairly intuitive (isn’t everything after you break the code) the way the skins are laid. The forward skins lay over the rear skins and the top skins lay over the bottom skins. Think of the way water will flow down the sides and from front to rear – it’s the same as the way roofers lay the shingles so that the water runs over, not “under” the shingles. :) So, a long session in the shop, but really just re-doing what should have already been done...
