Brief Description:  Tailcone Bulkheads – Drilling the WD-409

I separated the Rudder stops, angles and controls stops from the F-800 angle piece by cutting at the locations shown – after consulting the drawing, then I smoothed and radiused the parts. I didn’t work the F-810C-1 & F-811C-1 angles just yet because I don’t have the longerons installed yet – but will finalize their fit when the longerons are installed.

Next I clecoed the F-812A-1, and F-812C-1 Bulkheads to each other and drilled all the 1/8” common holes. I opened the bend angle on the forward bulkhead flanges so that they both taper in to the rear/smaller end of the fuselage in parallel. The plans say do this with a hand seamer, but I found it easier to do it by hand.

For the next step, I had read that there were issues with the plans for the where to drill the keeper rivets on the WD-409 Tail spring. It took a while for me to decipher View A-A on DWG 73 but with the help of VAF and Jeff Mitchell’s build site - I managed to get a picture of what is called for. For those of you building an -8, one of the dimensions (the vertical distance between the AN4 bolts) is listed as 7/8" but this may be incorrect! The revised dimension for this according to the forum builders is 1- 23/32". Double check your plans. Anyway, the revised dimension doesn’t come into play until later – so after researching the proper dimension, I felt confident enough to measure and mark the vertical position of the top edge of the WD-409 Tail spring mount – this is the part that the tail wheel is attached too – so it’s kind of a big deal. (movie line). Once marked – it was a matter of clamping the assembly into the drill press to drill the keeper holes. With the assembly still all clamped up, I machine countersunk the rivet keeper holes as they need to be flush so that the vertical stabilizer will be able to be mounted flush to the back of this assembly.
