Brief Description:  Re-purpose the wing stand into a wing cradle

Tonight, with Bob’s assistance, we were able to disassemble the wing stand and re-build it as a wing cradle. The wing stand is what the wing is built on – with the wing hanging “nose up” on the spar, while the wing cradle is where the wing is finished, it gets it’s flaps and ailerons installed and is “stored” nose down. I followed the basic plan for it on drawing 12A – with one important (to me) change. The change came about this way… After the empennage was finished all those months ago, I haven’t had a place to store it. The vert. stab/rudder is fairly small so it has been residing in the corner of the office. The horizontal stab/elevators (HS) are pretty big – at over 8 ft. wide. They have been sitting in their assembly cradle in the shop/garage since completion. The problem is - every time I need to move the wife’s car into the garage, the wings would be rolled, and the HS would be moved over to the side of the shop – and then the process reversed for a work session. Day in, day out… that’s a lot of moving, and moving increases the risk of a problem happening – which could cause damage.

So, I decided when I was thinking about the design of my wing cradle that I would build in some extra room between the wings which sit parallel to each other. I felt that spreading the wings apart a few more inches would leave room for the HS. So tonight – Bob helped me make it happen. Now, it’s a one piece cradle with the wing and HS residing on it – and I love it. Big thanks to Bob for the assist on this one – we would discuss the plan and he would just grab the pen, mark the wood – then grab the saw and make it happen. I really like my new wing cradle.
