Brief Description:  more main wing rib rivets - wing stand

Tonight we finished the remaining front spar rivets and all of the rear spar rivets on the right wing. Then it was time to revisit the wing stand. Ironically, the last time Bob was in town was the last time I touched the wing stand (except to move it around the shop to keep it out of the way). Now we had to re-acclimate ourselves to what the original design goal was and what we needed to do to accomplish that goal. (I have been purposely holding off on hanging the "guts" until I knew the dimensions of the wing - this was so I could build it to my height.) I scrounged up the original (adapted) design drawing/shopping list and we went to work. We got as far as installing the adjustable end where the wing roots will lay and had to do some re-engineering on the wing stand to insure a proper wing length fit. All in all – we have a good foundation for tomorrows’ build session and since Bob has the day off, I went ahead and took the day off too, so we will get an early jump on the wing stand and should be able to finish it off and hang some wing skeletons on it.

Bobs big help tonight was just having another person to talk things thru with. We did a ton of head scratching and what-if analysis in laying out how the wing stand should be built. By the end of the night we had decided that the adjustable end of the stand would be better/less complicated, if we made the two angles even with each other. Initially we thought that for strength, we should offset the two steel angles – but after seeing the finished product we both determined that the design will be plenty strong, cutting off some of the overlapping steel angle and mounting the two platforms level with each other. That will be the first change for tomorrow’s session…
