Brief Description:  Main spar platenuts

At lunch today I stopped by the big box store and bought a new battery for the Ryobi…So tonight I was able to continue the counter sinking of the attach holes. I finished CS’ing all the platenut attach holes (120 pairs) as well as the inspection panels on the bottom of the spars (24 pairs) using the leapfrog method to test fit each hole. Then I final drilled the screw hole (in the center of the pairs of attach holes) with the #19 drill bit. I deburred all of the bottom sides of the drilled holes. The tops didn't need to be deburred as they would be countersunk soon or already were. Then I primed the countersunk holes in preparation for attaching the platenuts. Next, I taped off a section of each spar, to minimize the amount of primer I shot on the spar. I wasn’t willing to totally minimize the overspray and use a q-tip to prime each hole, but I just sprayed a line of primer down the spar and then wiped off the excess with a paper towel. It’s not a big deal, but I was just trying to keep the pretty spar, pretty – and I only needed to get the primer onto the counter sunk surface for protection.

I have decided to follow the Van’s instructions here and rivet the platenuts on as the next step and then countersink for the main screw hole that the platenut retains. Some builders report problems with countersinking the main screw hole with the platenut already installed, others say it works fine. Tomorrow I will install the platenuts and then counter sink the big holes! I powered thru my fear of damaging the spar by doing lots of research and getting input from my mate Roger in San Antonio and my other buddy Rob, in Virginia. Thanks guys!
