Brief Description:  Working on the B-29, "FiFi" #2

We took clean paper rags and cleaning solution and made them into dirty rags fairly quickly. Depending on the part of the aircraft we worked on, the film was either a light dusting of oil and dirt or a very heavy covering of oil/dirt, which took lots of elbow grease to clean off. You can see in pictures 1 and 3 what the clean vs. dirty parts looked like as the lower sheet is clean and the upper sheet is dirty, except for a little circle. These areas were a fairly thick film of oily mess - as you would expect. We worked on cleaning the underside for a few hours and more guys showed up to help. It seemed like they were mostly airline mechanics and airline "office" guys that just like airplanes. Some were retirees, some were young guys - so we were young and old alike. It was good talking to all of them and thinking about the history we were touching!

Some mechanics were replacing some rivets on FiFi but they didn't let use. "regular volunteers" do any of that kind of work. Pretty soon it was lunch time and they brought in a dozen or so pizzas for the workers. I was ready for a break as my shoulders were getting a workout.
