Brief Description:  Test fit of the RV-8

One option for the RV-8 is called the “tall pilot option” which simply moves the top of the pilot seat slightly further back (about 1.25”). I am not overly tall, but my height is more in my torso than my legs - so I typically recline the seat back more than usual in any vehicle I drive. This is more comfortable for me because it helps to lower the vision plane where there are fewer obstacles (rear view mirrors, visor, sun shading strip). I want to be comfortable in my airplane, because I would like to spend a lot of time there! BUT…In airplanes, and in life – nothing is free (not even free Ice cream on Thursday’s, but that is a separate story) so any additional room for the pilot will mean that the GIB (girl in back) will have less room. So, I thought it best to “try on” a tall pilot option and a regular option, with the wife and see what we thought.

I put a request out on VAF and immediately received an invitation from Danny King with the perfect scenario, his “Doll” has the standard configuration while the other plane in his hanger, “Crazy Woman” has the tall pilot option, and he offered both for a try-on. Teresa and I went over to see Danny who was working on his HS service bulletin, and we sat in both the “Beautiful Doll” and “Crazy Woman”. Initially, the analytical side of my brain had planned on a full A-B comparison where I could review all sorts of measurements and data points and make a fact based decision. But in the end, even though I brought my list of measurements and the tape measure with us, my emotional-airplane-giddy brain took over and I never took used the tape measure, I just did informal “hand” measurements.

We both decided that the tall pilot option was the way to go…I will be using the cockpit adjustable rudder pedals, and now I am deciding whether it will be feasible to have both seat back supports and do a switch-out when I wanted to give the GIB some more room…

In the pictures below, you can see how the tall option (#2) moves the seat brace back rearward
