Brief Description:  Went to see Jay Pratt

Today I took the front and rear spar to Jay Pratt’s hanger at Hicks. Since he has helped build at least 41 RV’s he should be able to tell me, or show me how to fix this problem rivet, as well as give me a read-out on how the other rivets look and how my work is in general. The first thing out of his mouth is, “Oh, those are just terrible – throw the whole part away”… he was kidding. But then he said,"... but all those rivets are in backwards." I said, “Really?”, he said, “Yea, seriously, it doesn’t really matter, there are many a plane flying around with those same rivets in backwards, but they really are in backwards.” He went on to explain that when dissimilar thicknesses of metal are joined, the manufactured head goes against the thinner part. I asked him if I should drill them out – he said, “Absolutely not – that’s not a problem at all – those rivets are in there good and they will stay...It’s just preferred to do it the other way when possible". Dangit… Jay looked for a -5 rivet to fix the offending hole, but couldn’t find one…he ended up bending the rivet he tried to squeeze too.
Glad to know, it’s not just me, but still have to fix this one!

Being curious, I went out and looked up 4 other build logs for RV-8’s… All four had riveted the rear spar the way I did, and 3 had done the front spar the same way that I did. Guess I am not the only one! In the end, I need to get some "oops" rivets to fix the hole.
