Brief Description:  Canopy Skirt #16, Pull ring and other things

Today, I got the shop cleaned up, then I sanded down the right bottom of the canopy skirt as it was sticking down just a tad and was not flush with the metal fuselage skin. Then I started work on the “pull ring”. The canopy is attached the canopy frame, which is attached to the fuselage in 3 places. At the front, on the left and the right sides, it is attached to the left and right canopy rails. In the back, it’s attached to the canopy slide cap. The way the canopy closes is by sliding forward on the rails/cap until it gets about 4 inches from closed and then the slide cap drops down which closes the canopy / skirt forward and down to a “tight” fit. There will always be drafts thru the skirt – just a fact.

The pull ring is used (by some builders) to pull the canopy back, and up so that you can get that canopy up and started rolling back. There are many options, a 90 degree flange on the aft side of the skirt can be used, as well as a pull ring, a pull handle or just yanking on the canopy handle. I am choosing to use a pull handle.

For the pull handle, I took a piece of scrap aluminum, measured it off, cut and deburred it, and bend two identical piece, 90 degrees, so that when the two parts are put together, they look like an upside down “T”. I will cut a hole in the middle that my finger will fit in for the “pulling”. The bottom horizontal part of the “T” will go under the skirt and under the support aluminum to add further rigidity. I was able to get everything done on the pull ring except for the finger hole.
