Brief Description:  Empennage - Fiberglass work

Last time I worked on the rudder/VS fiberglass, I wanted to make sure that the rudder was installed properly on the VS so that the clearances are correct when I start making changes to the fiberglass. So, today I installed the HS/Elevators and the Rudder/VS on the fuselage and snugged up the nuts. I didn’t get them torqued, but snugged up will do what I need it to do. I could probably do the fiberglass work with the VS and HS not installed on the fuse, but they are unwieldy, and it’s better having them secured to the fuse…at least for the elevators – we shall see with the rudder.

I worked the right and left fiberglass parts that fit into the elevators as they needed to be cut away from the counterweights. They also didn’t fit as well initially, but the small pieces that fit in the HS tips are just trimmed back. I trimmed those pieces and they are ready to be drilled. Ironically, there are no pre-drilled holes for the HS parts in the HS – so I will be drilling those. I just want to make sure that I don’t need to “adjust” the tips in or out before I drill them. I used tape to hold the tips in place for sighting the parts. Most of today’s time was used installing the empennage, but also fiddling with the fiberglass. I believe I need to glass over the counterweight, so more research is needed.
