Brief Description:  Sportair Electrical class #1

I have been travelling (getting to that) and moving (son to post-college work life location) and it’s been a mix of catch up and priority management that has kept me out of the shop. However, I did get a good electrical training in Virginia. My buddy Bob, mentioned that he was going to take the EAA Sportair electrical class that was coming up and he was nice enough to offer free room, board and chauffer service if I made the trip to Virginia and took the class with him. Since he has been to Texas a few times to check in with me and help me with my project - I couldn’t pass that deal up! It was a very quick trip but I was able to get some learning, inspiration, great food and ice cream - so I count that as a very successful trip!

The learning came in the form of the Sportair electrical class – which provided me some much needed knowledge in the area of electron movement. I still have plenty to learn, but I know a lot more than I did and what I did learn about wiring is that it’s kind of a linear thought process, which is the way I think. With electrical installs, you first determine what piece of electrical equipment you want to install, a gauge, flap motor, GPS, etc. Then you look up/determine its electrical requirement from the spec sheet of that piece of eq. and determine where you will locate it (which determines how far from the power source), which will then determine what size wire must be used.
Then you know what size fuse/breaker must be on the wire and where the ground wire gets routed, and BOOM – you are done with that piece and you go to the next piece of equipment. Do that enough times and you have the wiring diagram for your plane…then the implementation and install – the actual work. Like I said, this 1.5 day class gave me enough foundational knowledge to have the confidence to gain more knowledge. I recommend it!
