Brief Description:  Empennage Attach - Drill HS

Big progress today as I was able to get the horizontal stabilizer completely drilled. I started off with match drilling the rear spar and the stab attach bars. This was an easy drill once the HS was clamped in the proper position since there were match holes there to key off of.

Next step was to clamp down the front spar and start measuring from the back outboard corners of the HS to a point on the fuse...same for each side. I was able to get the distances to within 1/16" of each other and the tolerance is 1/4" so I was ready to measure and drill.

The front spar is drilled in 4 places on the splice angle but there aren't any guide holes and edge distance is tight and critical. It's also further complicated by the lower access around the splice angle and I wasn't able to get the calipers in there for good measurements so I had to improvize with some aluminum scrap cut into pre-measured templates. There's also not enough room to get the regular drill in there so the holes need to be drilled with the angle drill. I started with the #30 and then stepped up a few to the final size of #12. Then I installed the nuts, washers and bolts and drilled the aft holes to #12 as well and put in the temporary hardware. Glad that's behind me.
