Brief Description:  Empennage Attach – Level fuse

I have been mentally gearing up for this step for a while now going back to when I decided to remake the HS. It’s one of those steps that you have to get right, but also one of those steps that is not hard, just stressful. First is to separate the F-810E spacers from the F-885 spacer and smooth and debur them. They are fairly thick spacers and took some time at the scotchbrite wheel.

Next was the leveling of the fuse. I picked up two 48” levels to supplement my electronic level as well as to be able to level across distances that the 24” electronic level couldn’t span. A little
research showed that the fuselage could be leveled with the three in an “H” pattern to level side-to-side and front-to-back. So that’s what I did, after calibrating the electronic level. Once I got the magical “0.0 degree” reading in both planes, I verified “level” at the F-804-1, bulkhead and F819-1, aft deck, as Van suggested and they were good there too – so it was time to place the HS on the fuse.

The HS is loosely clamped to the fuse at the rear spar/F-811B-1 stab attach bars with the F-810E spacers sitting under the forward spar/HS-814-1 Splice angle. There is also a temporary spacer placed at the rear spar, which is a 3/16” drill bit. The HS is placed laterally by measuring the distance between the center of the rear spar and the stab attach bars. My centered measurement was 2 25/32” – just under 2 ¾”.

I placed two spacer blocks on the rear spar of the HS and then put the 48” level, and the 24” level on top and initially the L-R angle was off by 2/10th of a degree so, per plans, I put an additional spacer on the forward left side. The first spacer I used was 1/32” aluminum – which caused the L-R angle to be high by 2/10th of a degree… I looked around the shop until I found some stainless sheet that was 1/64”, cut a small spacer, deburred the edges and “Whammo” we were back to 0.0
degrees – level.
