Brief Description:  Horizontal Stabilizer Spar Service Bulletin #4

More disassembling today - as part of not liking the spar/reinforcement angle holes that were drilled out as part of the service bulletin - I have decided to replace the spars and both of the reinforcement angles. I would like to save as many of the other parts as I can - since there is no reason to redo parts that I don't need to.

The plan is to drill off the two skins, which is 180 rivets for each skin in excess of what is originally needed for the service bulletin, and re-use them if I am happy with the results. If not, I will have any parts I need shipped with the finishing kit at the end of this month.

I got one of the skins drilled off using the, “punch, drill, punch” method. I first punch the rivet head right in the center to give the drill bit a good start. Then I drill the rivet thru the center a bit deeper than the head, then I just punch the whole rivet out of the hole. It works really well on the 3/32” skin rivets and out of the 180 rivets only 5 were less than “very good”. On the sub-structure, I tested all of the holes with a cleco tug, rotating and tugging at each 90 degrees…then I looked at all of the holes with the 5x glasses. Next I will look at and test the holes in the skin.
