Brief Description:  landing gear #1

It’s time to work on getting the gear mounted. I am not sure if I will be able to work constantly on the gear until mounted, but I am wading into the waters, so to speak. So, with the Grove one piece gear, not all of the same parts are used as with the Van’s 2 piece gear – which makes sense. I am going to follow the same methodology as the Van’s instructions , but since the Van’s instructions cannot be used specifically, I will be using what I have learned from my friend Jared in Montana, who has mounted 2 of the one piece Groves’.

First order of business is to invert the fuselage and level the forward center portion of the F-822-1 forward floor panel both laterally and longitudinally. I had a smidgen of sealant where the floor meets the firewall and the sealant squeezed out and I didn’t want false readings from that, so I carefully shaved the excess off with the utility knife. With that accomplished I started the cyclical process of leveling the fuse, front to back and side to side. I say, “cyclical” because every time you move it on one plane, it has an effect on the other plane…and you have to decide if the front should come down, or should the rear go up? Well, after chasing the level around for a while I was able to get a 0 degree reading front-back and left-right so it was success. I even put a golf ball on the front floor surface to test the flatness – it passed!

For grins, I put the wear plates in their positions and set the landing gear on the fuse and then strung fishing line thru the outer holes in the gear and dropped plumb bobs. The left measured 1’9 and ¼” from the fuse and the right measured 1’9 and ½” – so I was 1/8” off. I think I just got lucky. I actually might even be closer than that because the left side had the skin (loosely clecoed) on and the right side didn’t. When I measure for real, I will have both of the front skins on and fully clecoed. Anyway, all of this was done off the clock and I didn’t get any pictures but it was a fun exercise.
