Brief Description:  Rivet bellcrank rib, F-818D-1

After drilling the left bracket yesterday, I match drilled the baggage rib to accept the rivets and then went about the business of laying out the holes and drilling the right bracket. I forgot to mention that yesterday I also converted the top bellcrank rib rivets to flush by countersinking the baggage rib and dimpling the bellcrank rib as the pitch servo bracket will be sitting flush on the baggage ribs and the 470 rivets that are called out in the plans would not work. I riveted the top flush rivets and then began working on the side bellcrank rib rivets (see silver clecos sticking up and down in picture #2)

The plans calls for AN470AD3-4's which are the universal head rivets, 3/32" diameter...well, the only problem is, Van's doesn't give you any of those so builders either drill them up to 1/8" universal or dimple them for flush 3/32". I decided to go with the flush 3/32" but the area is suprisingly tight and the fuse is fairly narrow there - so I had to use the pull rivet dimple method as there was not enough room for the pneumatic squeezer. After getting all 4 holes dimpled, I tried to drive the first flush rivets and it did not turn out good - it cleated over as I did not shorten the rivet as per plans. To drill out the bad rivet I had to cut a drill bit down to 3 inch long with the dremel tool... then I drilled out the offending rivet. I might talk to Van's about putting blind rivets in there - but that's all for tonight.
