Brief Description:  Wings; Hanging of the Wings 1/3

Hanging of the Wings

To level the fuselage the wheels were removed and the axels and the tail were supported on timber frames to allow shimming of these supports for tranverse and fore/aft levelling.

The precise levelling was done using an automatic laser level station (survey instrument) which allowed us to precisely level the mainspar wing attachment bolts. The same procedure was used for the fore/aft levelling and finally the tip to rudderpost dimensions on both sides were checked and adjusted.

The wing supports were prepared using construction scaffolding, fitted with padded timber support beams. The initial attachment of the wing to the fuselage was done using 1/4" bolts in the mainspar and 3/16" bolts in the rearspar attachment location to allow final/accurate adjustment of the wing angles for both sides. Initially the front position was checked and found to be accurate as not to require any adjustments, but the rear attachment points were found to be slightly out of tolerance.

This allowed us to drill and ream out the front attachment holes to 3/8" and to fit the final attachment bolts. The rearspar 1/4' boltholes were a few millimetres misaligned and clamping of the wing was undertaken to ensure that progressive opening of the holes to the 5/16" holes could be done without any change to the wing angle.
