Brief Description:  Spraying Colour Top Coats 1/4

Spraying Colour Top Coats

Following long considerations on type of colour coating, PolyFibre Aero-Thane or Ranthane respectively, and the issues with spraying poly-urethane paints in a home made spraying booth including extremely expensive setup. The latter includes "Fresh Air Source Respirators, spray-proof goggles, prorective clothing to keep the mist off your skin and eyes. Given all these requirements for a single paint job (one aeroplane) it was not considered an attractive option.

Thus the decision was made to opt for the Stewart System waterborne aircraft finishing system. This system uses water as the carrier to deposit the solids (paint and catalyst) and thus is not solvent based. following discussion with the people from Stewart System on compatibility of the PolyFibre system, already applied to the airframe (PolyFibre fabric and the varoius coatings, including ply brush and UV protection coating), and assurances received from Stewart System that there top coat was fully compatible with these applied material and coatings, we progressed with this idea and found that it resulted in an excellent finished product.

Protection during the spraying included an exhaust fan to extract airborne overspray, full protective suits and breathing masks. The topcoating included a primer coat followed by the recommended number of paint coats and resulted in a full gloss final end product.

The paint colour scheme included a Federal Yellow/Insignia White primary colour and Midnight Black/Battle Ship Grey trim colours.
