Brief Description:  Installing the pitot tube

The RV12 has an unusual location for the pitot tube. It is mounted in the centre of the spinner.

Picture 1 shows the plastic mounting block at the back of the gearbox. This requires some tricky preparation and drilling. Basically you have to create a depression in the wall of the pitot tube, so that the screw shown can engage in the drilled depression, to lock the pitot tube in place. Drill too far, and you break through into the tube. Maybe I should offer some help to BP ;-)

Picture 2 shows where the flexible pitot tube connects to the assembly. Some naff safety wiring, which I replaced, is on show here. It was rather difficult to get the wire under the tube, because it is hard against the cooling shroud. I may have to seal the end with something to eliminate air leaks.

If I had my time again, I would endeavour to push the fibreglass cooling shroud a bit further down to make this job easier. Those following might wish to test fit the plastic block before sealing the shroud, to ensure clearance.

Picture 3 shows the pitot tube sticking out from the prop mount. I can see this getting bent unless I am very careful. The pitot tube is now just 2 inches behind the electric garage door as it closes.
