Brief Description:  Tools Used

The introduction sections of the RV-12 plans (Sections 1-5) cover tools and techniques for building the plane. This includes an inventory of required tools and some consumables. The inventory has been updated several times, based on feedback, so should now be representative. Of course, you can never have too many tools, so additional or different tools may well make life easier.

I started this project with no tools to speak of. My starting point was to purchase some general workshop tools, which are noted in the Workshop section. This section covers stuff specific to building the RV-12.

My baseline purchase was a "complete" set of RV-12 tools from Avery Tools in the US of A. The kit was assembled from the Vans inventory at the time, which was largely complete. However, throughout the build I identified a few items that were required but not present in the kit. This can cause delay and additional costs when these are purchased in mid-flight.

I cannot fault Avery on their service. They supplied additional tools and materials with a good turnaround given their distance from Scotland. Just one tool failed in service (a short drill bit for a right-angle drill), and this was promptly replaced FOC. And I was disappointed in just one tool - an edge-breaking tool. I subsequently purchased a different design from Cleveland Tools, which was much easier to use.

Gloster Air Parts in the UK are agents for Avery. Proprieters Peter and Diana Pengilly are keen RVers and very helpful. Their stock is necessarily restricted, but they were able to very quickly provide what tools and hardware they do stock. The complete Avery Tool kit can be ordered from them.
