Brief Description:  Benches are ready

Finally, I have a set of two benches, each 7ft 6in long by 2 ft wide. (I need to keep working in "old money", just like our cousins from the US of A). The benches can be bolted end-to-end to construct the wings, or side-by-side to construct the fuselage.

The design is the EAA workbench, but the dimensions are modified to suit my requirements.

Similarly, I have built a third bench, again to the same overall design, but this time just 3ft 6in long to house the big tools (pillar drill, vice, bench grinder). The sizing is such that the compressor sits underneath. If necessary, I can clad the sides to reduce the compressor noise. All benches are equipped with 3in rubber wheels so they are portable.

* The benches are a complete overkill. Some folk used a couple of cheap foldable tables. They are only really required to hold the assemblies at a suitable level for working. There's no requirement for precision flat or level surfaces. In fact my garage floor slopes down towards the entrance. Having said that, it was a pleasure working with really robust units, on wheels. The shelves underneath were fully utilised as additional storage. I wired up power points to facilitate use of power tools. And now the project is complete I still have solid workbenches. One disadvantage is that the benches are too high once the fuselage construction is well advanced. Ideally I would want to lower everything by, say, 18 inches at that stage. *
