Brief Description:  Vertical Stabiliser Spar Preparation

Today I also completed Page 06-03 Steps 1-7. This prepares the Vertical Stabiliser spar.

I had to drill Step 6 with an electric drill as #40 is too small to fit the pillar drill chuck! I'll need to read the drill manual, as this seems rather odd. I don't know whether a pillar drill is really necessary for all of this work. It certainly takes time to set everything up. How much of a skew can you make when you hand-drill two thin sheets of material?

At Step 5 I suspect I may have slightly bent the flanges. They are certainly not quite at right angles to the web. As a result, at Step 7, I may have drilled the hinge bracket attachment holes very slightly inboard of where they should be. I'll need to check whether the bolts and the rivet holes all line up when I am ready to start riveting. Another lesson learned.

I also discovered that Alclad scratches really easily. When I removed the blue plastic the spar was pristine shiny aluminium. After 6 hours of work, it looks well used, although I don't think any of the scratches are more than "skin deep".
