Brief Description: Final fitting of the stabilitor
|
|
I fitted the stabilitor for the final time. This time with the washers in place. Not easy, but made a bit easier with superglue on the washers, and careful placement of the stabilitor at the correct height on a workbench. I could then slowly manoeuvre the stabilitor into place. I also connected up the trim mechanism, again hopefully for the last time.
And then I attached the stabilitor cables for the first time. Pulling the stick back does indeed raise the stabilitor. But read on...
The rest of the day was taken up with a final relocation to the hangar at Perth. This was earlier than planned, as the LAA Chief Engineer planned to visit Scotland on Thursday, but only if I could show the completed structure with the wings attached. This would involve more trips to Perth (40 minutes each way) than I wished, but was a necessary evil.
The trip was not without some excitement and anguish. With the stabilitor on, the overall width is 8 feet, 6 inches wider than the UK legal limit. Worse, we had installed the plane asymetrically on the trailer so there was no overhang on the pavement side, but a 12 inch overhang on the road side. Negotiating narrow roads meant oncoming cars came around bends, and passed underneath the stabilitor! We got stuck in the first village with a large caravan coming the other way. Fortunately he stopped, so between us we caused a two-way traffic jam. In the ensuing confusion, Keith sacrificed the wing of his car to save my tail feathers. I have a pristine plane, and he has a deep scratch along the length of his car :-(
