Brief Description:  Trailer

I don't yet know whether I will leave the plane hangared wings on, hangared wings off, or whether it will be trailered. I'm keeping an eye on what others are doing.

* Three years after launch, there's little talk on the Vans Airforce website of people regularly removing their wings. Wing removal really is a five minute job, but requires two people (and the wing weights approximately 50 kg). I do have a wing rack on wheels in the hangar, so could save possibly 60-70% of hangar charges with the wings removed, even if the plane is not trailered home. Wing attachment is not so quick if you have installed the rubber wing-root seals, as I have. I have found the easiest way is to winch the two wings together with luggage straps, to compress the seals to the point where the wing spar pins can be inserted. Even so, a realistic time is probably no more than 15-20 minutes with two people. Of more concern is the difficulty of inserting/retracting the wing spars without damaging the thin skin surrounding the spar holes. I suppose these holes could be further enlarged and/or reinforced, to reduce the incidence of damage. Of more concern is the risk of damage if a wing is mishandled or dropped. There's also wear-and-tear to be considered on the wing-root electrical contacts which provide power to the lights and stall warner. *

As at February 2011, the plane is hangared with the wings "permanently" attached. I may still reconsider, but it is not currently a priority.
