Brief Description:  More Tools

Today I ordered a Dremel lookalike, an engineer's vice, an expensive 12-speed pillar drill, and a bench grinder.

* I used all of these tools extensively, although the Dremel was least-used. I'd say the vice is essential, though probably doesn't need to be a beefy unit.

The 12-speed pillar drill is an overkill. Any basic pillar drill is probably good enough if parts can be clamped in place. The chuck on my unit would not hold a #40 drill bit which was a big disadvantage. I should have purchased a different chuck (or drill). In the event I made do with a hand-held electric drill, or my air-drill, both of which worked fine with a #40 drill bit.

The bench grinder was a blessing. I removed the two vicious wheels and their guards, and replaced them with a medium and a fine scotchbrite wheel. I used the coarser wheel for grinding material away, and the finer one for final polishing. Much recommended. Both wheels lasted the course, though both are now somewhat worn and have grooves.

It did take me a while to learn how to align metal edges parallel to the wheel, not at right angles. If a part at right angles "catches" it can fly across the room, or get bent as quick as a flash. With experience, I learned to hold the material at different angles, but not before I had had a few incidents.*
