I am fortunate in having a double garage, with one large up-and-over door, at the top of our garden which can be used as a workshop. It's basically around 19ft square, or would be if all of the accumulated possessions/rubbish can be organised, relocated, or disposed of. The ceiling isn't too high and the overhead door is only around 6ft high. There's limited storage space in the rafters, which have been partially floored (but this area too is full of "possessions").
I need to be able to accommodate my wife's car overnight! So, if possible, my working space will need to compressed at the end of each day.
I recognise that the momentum of the project will suffer if the working environment is less than ideal, so I am concerned that even the best part of a double garage may still be a constraint. I would not consider building anywhere other than at home, as I just don't think it would work for me.
The garage is currently unheated, poorly lit, and has no home comforts (such as music) although there is a beer fridge. The latter may be a disadvantage ;-)
