Brief Description:  Tackling the engine cap bolts

The bottom two bolts were relatively easy to extract, coat in Loctite 243, and reinsert, adding some torque seal so that I can spot any subsequent movement. I needed to get a helper to lift the engine to align the lower right bolt with its hole.

The top right bolt required the removal of the carb air filter, and the bolts retaining the manifold. This allowed the carburettor to be pushed upwards and inboard, providing access to the cap bolt. I removed this too, applied Loctite and replaced again with torque seal so that I can inspect in future. The torque seal is just visible without disturbing the carb.

Top left is the issue as access to the bolt is prevented by the fibreglass cooling shroud glued to the engine. I had to undo the manifold bolts, remove the exhaust sensor, clip off some tie wraps, drain off some coolant, and then undo the coolant retaining bracket at the left side adjacent to the shroud. Having done all of this I could just move the carb up and inboard enough to see the shroud.

I had previously ground the end of a junior hacksaw blade to a point, and I used this tool to cut out the corner of the shroud. I took this home, and using scrap aluminium fashioned brackets along the lines of someone else's design (nicked from the web site). See Pictures 1 and 2.
