With the diode removed from the starter relay, the ignition switch operated correctly. Tested a new diode connected the same way the old diode was connected (across the two small relay terminals) and got the previous fault of the relay remaining engaged after the key was released. Connected the new diode to the starter relay wire terminal and grounded to the fuselage and the key and relay both operated normally. Reconnected starter cable to starter.
