Brief Description:  Rudder - Port

The rib layups were trimmed and cleaned up on both the winglet and the rudder. The hinge slots were cut out for each of the hinges. Similar to the starboard winglet, the bottom hinge was moved up to clear the internal bellhorn. Part of the hinge was trimmed to allow it to overlap the bellhorn.

Each hinge was put into its place and held in place by clamps. An aluminum angle was clamped on the other half of the hinge to simulate the rudder. The hinges were aligned using this angle. An 1/8" hole was drilled were each bolt would eventually be installed. Clecos were installed to hold the hinges in place. The clamps were removed and the alignment was chacked again using the angle.

One at a time, the clecos were removed and the 1/8" hole increased to 3/16". The hinge was removed and the nutplates installed using rivets. The hinge was replaced and bolted in place. This was repeated until all the hinges were bolted.

The bottom hinge become misaligned somehow. The bolt holes were enlargened to allow the hinge to align properly. This may need to have flox and redrilled at a later date.

The rudder was placed into the winglet and clamped. The inside hinge was held in place using a hack saw blade. A 1/8" hole was drilled in each hinge and a cleco installed. Then all of the rest of the pop rivet holes were drilled and clecos installed.
