I tried fitting the tail fairingonto the fuselage. It does not quite fit. It isnt off by much, but just enough that it leaves a couple of fairly good sized gaps. At first I iwas a little panicked because I thought I must have done something wrong in assembling the tail section. I then began researching other builders sites and discovered that poor fitment of the fiberglass tail fairing is a acommon problem.
I spent about an hour cutting the facotry piece and trying to figure out how I would glass it back together. I decided that the end result would still be unsatisfactory, so I decided to make my own.
I had once watched a hints for homebuilders video where the guy made a plug for a cable fairlead out of foam. The then covered the foam with electrical tape and usd hairspray as a mold release for the fiberglass overlay. It seems to work really well.
I decided that I would try to use that method, but instead of electrical tape, I would use duct tape.
As a test, I put some duct tape on a bent piece of scrap, applied two coats of hairspray, and applied the fiberglass. I allowed it to dry overnight. Much to my syrprise it worked great. The hardened fiberglass popped off of the tape with no issues. (photo 2)
