Brief Description:  Paint Scheme Planning

Thanks to finishing up my degree, I haven't had time to work at the hangar. However, I decided to use the time to plan the paint scheme. I have been wanting to pre-finish components, to help protect them and to simplify the finishing process. I intend for the plane to be painted before first flight, after my experience with the RV-6A which has been flying for over two years now and I still haven't taken it down to be painted.

This project is to be dedicated to my late mother, Maxine. Armed with a couple of photos of my Mom in her twenties, I approached Jerri Bergen of Victory Girl to do a nose-art piece for the plane. After several preliminary ideas, we settled on a pose reminiscent of the produce box art of the era. Since Mom was both an avid gardener and worked as a USDA inspecter for tomoato processing plants in California, this seemed especially appropriate. Image 1 is a rough version that was used to plan the rest of the scheme (sorry, you don't get to see the finished version until it's on the plane.)

Next I turned to Scheme Designers for help with the overal paint scheme. The criteria were to use what Mom called autumn colors (blacks, reds, oranges, and yellows) that she loved best, allow for the nose (or tail) art, and, if possible, leave some areas bare metal to show off the workmanship. They gave me several iterations but we eventually abandoned the bare metal idea, and then moved forward with more convention designs. Pictured below are the final rendering and now I am waiting for the specifications that I can take to a paint shop. The hours I counted in this log were spread out over several weeks and only represent my own time spent on the process. Both Jerri Bergen and Scheme Designers put it much more time and I have to thank them for a wonderful job.

Oh. yes, I almost forgot. The nose art will be tweaked into both left and right versions and printed for application to the paint scheme, I am deciding now between a high-performance vinyl decal or a waterslide decal which can be
