Brief Description:  Installed eyeball hardware in firewall recess

Because I wanted to use steel eyeball passthroughs instead of the snap bushings that the instructions called for for the control cable penetrations, I checked on the VAF forums to see if there would be any problems with interference when repositioning the penetrations. Immediately I got a reply with pictures showing the position of equipment back there as well as a similar installation using aluminum eyeballs.

I positioned the upper two eyeballs so that the 1.125" holes would overlap the pre--drilled holes in the recess. The main holes were drilled to 1" using a unibit. Then the backing plate was located and the six screw holes marked and drilled. Once the holes were deburred, the backing plate was screwed to the assembly and the center hole enlarged to match the plate using a Dremel tool. The outboard plate was done first and the inboard plate butted against it. Finally, the lower plate was located to fit up against the upper plates. Once all the backing plates were mounted, the aft eyeball receptacles were positioned and screwed in place to help stiffen the recess around the new holes and also to cover the raw edges. Finally, the recess was clecoed to the firewall, ready to rivet.
