Brief Description: Starting the Horizontal Stabilizer
Well, today was the day. I manned up and finished unpacking everything. It seems kind of silly since I am deploying in a few weeks and will be gone for a year, but it feels good to finally start.
I guess I was afraid to start. I don't know what was keeping me. I have been wanting to do this for a long time. So, I told myself the damn thing won't build itself.
I started by finishing unpacking the box that had the outer skins and misc pieces of aluminum. Then I opened the instructions to Section 6: The Empennage
The rear spar assembly was pretty simple. Had a bit of a Dooh!!! moment, when I thought there were some missing pieces. My dumb butt forgot to open up all the little brown bags that came in a clear plastic bag. The "missing" parts were discovered after a call to Van's inquiring about the parts. God bless the guy on the other line. He told me exactly where they were, and he was right :)
Got the rear spar totally finished and then took it apart as per the instructions.
Started work on the front spar but only got to the second step before I had to stop for the evening. I need to find a better way of cutting aluminum stock than using the bench grinder.
