Brief Description:  Sealed Up Fuel Tank

This spans several days.

On 1/31/12, sealed remaining areas, corners, cranks, and crannies with the focus on sealing the rivets and faying surfaces of the tank top skin from the inside. (page 37-06, first part of step 9). What a PITA! The only access was through the res plate opening so by the time my arm got through the hole, there was very little room to see where I was or what I was doing. Most of it was done by feel and then backing out and shining a flashlight inside to see the mess.

On 2/1/12, installed a bright light at the res plate opening while the garage was dark and inspected for obvious leaking light. Wanted to do this to make sure there was no obvious areas that needed to be sealed prior to closing up the tank. Everything looked good with no obvious light shining on the outside of the tank. Hope the same results are seen during the leak check specified in Section 37.

Today finished the rest of step 9 by sealing and installing T-1209 res sender plate and IE F-385B sending unit. (page 37-06, rest of step 9).
Page 37-06 is complete.

Also sealed and installed Moeller mechanical gage through the tank top skin.

Installed VA-261 fuel strainer. Use Loctite 567 on the threads. (page 37-02, step 13).
Page 37-02 is complete.

Time to let the tank sit for a couple of weeks to ensure that the sealant is fully cured before leak checking.

CRAP! CRAP! CRAP!
While finishing up this entry, that sinking feeling hit my stomach. I didn't remember tightening the fuel return line to the bulkhead fitting inside the tank. While fitting the tank top skin, the return line nut was hand started with every intention of going back and tightening but don't remember if I did or not. Sealant on the res sender plate was still wet so off it came and sure enough, the nut was not tightened down. Line is now tight and the res sender plate has a fresh coat of sealant and re-installed.
