Brief Description:  Modified Bending Brake

In order to make the reverse bend in the aft wing spar, the bending leaf on the brake needs to be more narrow than the 2.5 inch leaf that is installed. When you remove the leaf to expose a more narrow (1/2) inch leaf, the break is no longer stiff enough to form a straight bend. As a result, I had to modify the bending leaf as shown in the pictures. Picture 1 shows the more narrow edge that was added (and supported with gussets). Now, for narrow web bends, I can unbolt, flip and reinstall the bending leaf to give that capability. Additionally, a modification can be seen that I added to the nose piece. A radius bar was welded and tabs added such that the unit is now firmly bolted in position on the clamp nose. This will help make the bends more precise with consistant bend radius.
Finally, while I was modifying the bending brake, I added a scale as shown in picture 2 todepict the angle of bend. The trick is now to accurately estimate the springback angle. Normally, I would expect 7 degrees, but with the flexibility of the new nosepiece and other factors, I see as much as 14 degrees. With the scale, however, I can get repeatable results.
